The National Youth Summit will be held for the second year, this time taking place in Birmingham on Wednesday 5 July. It will bring together leaders, change-makers and creators to empower the younger generation through the principles of co-operation.

This is one of the most challenging times to be a young person in the UK. With climate change, the cost-of-living crisis, job instability, social media pressure and the lasting impacts of the pandemic, it is no wonder that young people feel pessimistic about the future.

We believe that co-operatives offer significant opportunities to respond to these challenges. Operating across all sectors, co-ops allow young people to thrive in an environment that provides fair wages and secure jobs, tackles climate change and provides both educational and personal development alongside a sense of belonging.

However, research conducted by YouGov found that over half of young people (54%) are unable to name a single co-operative business, with only 14% able to name three or more. This desperate lack of awareness is stifling the ability of co-ops to provide answers to social issues faced by young people.

On this basis, Co-operatives UK is on a mission to inspire and support the next generation of co-operation to help secure a sustainable future for both young people and the movement.

Rose Marley, CEO of Co-operatives UK, said:

“Engaging young people is critical for the long-term sustainability of co-operatives and the wider movement. We know that Gen Z have strong ethical views, want to be in control of their careers and work in organisations where they feel a sense of belonging."

"While this chimes with the co-op way of doing business, many young people are unaware of what being a co-operative actually means – or face barriers to getting involved with one."

"The 2023 National Youth Summit will provide a crucial opportunity to break down these barriers – introducing the younger generation to the co-op movement and empowering them to tackle the challenges they face through the principles of co-operation.”

Working with The Co-operative Bank, the Co-op Foundation and The Co-operative College, Co-operatives UK is inviting young people from across the UK to the Studio in Birmingham to hear from a dynamic and inspiring range of speakers who are passionate about youth engagement.

The one-day summit will consist of a series of interactive and educational workshops that will explore co-operative solutions to the big issues facing young people, as well providing the opportunity to learn about what ‘being a co-op’ means and the benefits of co-operation.

Our aim is that the young people who attend the conference will leave with newfound awareness and passion for the co-operative movement, inspired to tackle the challenges they face through the principles of co-operation.
