Sensible Housing Co-operative
No 1 City Road
City Road East
Sensible Housing Co-op was formed in the 1980s by a group of youngish single people who were fed up of having little or no options when it came to housing. They scraped the necessary funds together to register as a co-operative and this meant that they were eligible for government grant to help them purchase or build homes for themselves. Over time the co-op grew until it had refurbished 16 houses in the Great Lever area of Bolton. They then commissioned a new block of 12 flats aimed primarily at young single people or couples.
The co-op is still run by its members for its members. Our member households vary from young single people to families with children.
In 2012 we completed a large stock investment programme which saw all our propeties receive upgrades to kitchens, bathrooms, windows, doors and heating.
In recent years the co-op has employed a managing agent to take over the day to day business such as rent collection and repairs. All decisions are made by the co-op's management committee which is made up entirely of tenant members.
