miEnterprise Herefordshire Community Interest Company has been formed as the first of what may be a number of similar new social enterprises. It has been set up to offer Supported Self-Employment as an employment option for learning disabled people. People who, in many cases, are furthest from the job market. A great many learning disabled people want to work and earn money and some people have been supported into 'regular' jobs. While this has worked for some, for the majority it has not. Self-employment, in main because of it's inherent flexibility as well as the other reasons listed below, could be a much better option for those people for whom 'getting a job' is not going to work. However self-employment has not been generally pursued as an option. There are a number of reasons why not, but the main ones are: fear of unexpectedly losing benefit entitlement, a lack of an enterprise culture within current social care services and staff, and a lack of knowledge about other busin
