The Society was originally formed as the Leicester & District Society of Model Engineers. A meeting was arranged for Friday, 22nd of October 1909 at the Rutland Coffee House, 11 perspective members attended.
The Railway runs for public rides every Saturday and Sunday afternoon (2pm to 5pm) from April to October, weather permitting. Building, maintenance & repairs are also carried out on Saturday afternoons throughout the year .
Visitors are welcome both at the track & at the Monday meetings where topics continue to be wide ranging from engineering to photography, ships to clocks, airbrush painting, welding, metal beating, travel, canals & locks, the Mary Rose Trust, Leicester’s water supply, industrial archaeology and so on. These are announced on Radio Leicester and in the Information Bureau as well as in the Society’s newsletter “The Buffer Stop”.
