Description:

The pub has a fascinating history and has always had a special place in the heart of the local community. When the lease became available, a few driven members of the local area called a public meeting to discuss the option of a community owed pub, and the co-op was born. Members are as far flung as Peru and as local as next door, 189 people gained a share option that secured the future of their favourite pub. The pub is overseen by a voluntary board made up of members with a specific area of expertise or simply a willingness to go an extra step and ensure the co-op runs smoothly.

As the first ever city centre co-operative pub the pub has gone from strength to strength, gaining a place in CAMRA's Real Ale Guide 2014 and placing in CAMRA’s 2014 York's Best Pub competition. Redecorated and revamped, the pub gained a new lease of life. On taking over the pub as a bonafide co-operative society, The Golden Ball proudly opted to become a Living Wage Employer, making local and national news.
