Description:

Lord Desborough gave the plots to the society in the Second World War to be used for food production. In 1953 his daughter allowed the site to become a company with members as shareholders. Total acreage is 6.953 acres, 3 Rods & 20 Perches and currently there are over one hundred plots. Plots are now rented out as half plots and the annual cost is £15.00 with a membership fee of £1.50. In addition there is a one off security, plus gate fee, membership and share certificate.

The site is run and maintained by a committee and volunteers who give up their time freely to ensure the smooth running and maintenance of the site. The committee meets about 4 times a year and each April the society holds its Annual General Meeting. Plot holders are free to grow fruit and vegetables of their choice and there are quite a few different varieties. A small amount of re-cycled tools, pots, watering cans, wheel barrows and compost bins is available for sale to members. These are items which have been left on site when a plot is vacated.

In the past two local primary schools have been helped with donated plants and seeds for their gardening activities. In 2013 society had a stand at Burnham Carnival as the theme was “The Great British Garden.” The allotments were actively promoted to carnival goers with members offering tastes of produce made from the allotments. Donated plants as well as tools and produce were sold and potential new members were recruited.

Each year the society holds a lunch time barbecue where members get to socialise on the site. New members are always welcome and are asked to get in touch with us. Our Allocation Secretary will invite you to come and visit the site and view some of the plots.
