The Co-operative and Mutual Economy 2026 reveals the scale, strength and potential of the UK’s democratic economy.
Our latest report brings together new data and analysis on co-operatives, mutuals, building societies and employee-owned businesses – organisations that give people a meaningful stake in the businesses and services that shape their lives.
It shows an economy generating £241.3 billion in annual income, supporting 1.7 million jobs and representing 70.4 million memberships. It also explores what makes these businesses different – from resilience and fair pay to shared ownership and community impact – and asks what it would take for more of them to start, grow and thrive.
