New support launched to kick-start co-operatives in Islington
News item
People in Islington with ambitions to start or grow a co‑operative can now access free support thanks to a new partnership between Co‑operatives UK and Islington Council.
The programme, funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF), offers groups and businesses in the borough the chance to explore how the co‑operative model can help them build fair, ethical and sustainable enterprises.
The initiative launches with a free one‑day workshop on Thursday 20 November 2025 at SPACE4 in Finsbury Park, open to anyone who:
- Wants to start a new co‑op
- Is developing a business and wants to run it co‑operatively
- Is part of an existing business considering conversion to a co‑op
James Wright, Policy and Development Lead at Co-operatives UK said:
“We’re delighted to partner with Islington Council to deliver targeted support for new co‑operatives in the borough. Co‑operatives in Islington are already demonstrating creativity and innovation, while providing good jobs, building community wealth and tackling local challenges head on.
“This investment means more people will have the chance to turn their ideas into businesses that build a fairer, more sustainable economy – and it’s fantastic to see Islington Council leading the way.”
Cllr Santiago Bell-Bradford, Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Inclusive Economy, Culture & Jobs said:
“We’re determined to build a more equal Islington, where everyone has the chance to succeed - supported by a local economy that works for all.
“Co‑ops are an important part of this. They are democratic, give people a real stake in the businesses they’re part of and they’re rooted in the needs of local people.
“We want Islington to be a place where good ideas grow into great businesses, and this programme will help residents turn their ambitions into enterprises that put people before profit and strengthen our local economy.”
What participants can expect
The workshop will cover the basics of how co‑ops work and the practical steps to setting one up.
Attendees will:
- Learn what a co‑op is and the benefits of the model
- Explore how to build a sustainable business plan
- Understand different legal structures
- Connect with like‑minded people
- Hear from inspirational local co‑ops
Everyone who takes part will also have the opportunity to apply for tailored one‑to‑one business consultancy support, to help shape their enterprise journey.
Why co-operatives?
Co-operatives are businesses owned and run by their members, who have an equal say in decisions. They exist to meet the needs and ambitions of their members, not distant shareholders, and are proven to be more resilient and rooted in their communities.
How to get involved
The workshop is free but places are limited.
This support is delivered by Co‑operatives UK in partnership with Islington Borough Council, with funding from the UK Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
