About the webinar

Most people who have heard of co-ops know a little about the way the movement formed but would be unsure about how Black history fits into the story.

Join this online panel to discuss Black History Month – how it started and what it means for us trying to tell the co-op story fairly.

A key part of the framing this conversation is around the invisibility of Black history in co-operative records and what we do about representation in the future.

We'll look at why it’s still difficult to achieve equity and meaningful visibility in our own times. And how we use the experiences of the past to forge a new, inclusive future.

Our panel

  • Karen Gabay, Broadcaster, TV producer and podcast host
  • Claude Hendrickson MBE, was project manager on the Frontline community self-build scheme in Leeds which in 1996 saw 12 unemployed Afro Caribbean men and their families build new homes for themselves
  • Christxpher Oliver, Policy and Research Officer, Ubele Initiative
  • Liz McIvor, Trust Manager, The Co-operative Heritage Trust
  • Rose Marley, CEO of Co-operatives UK

We invite anyone an interest in the history of our movement – and shaping its future – to join us to share your experiences and ideas.
