Cross Party Group Meeting: Solutions to the Cost of Living Crisis

Vikki Howells MS, Chair of the Cross Party Group for Co-operative and Mutuals, invites you to its next meeting, which will be held virtually. The meeting will be a discussion on the cost of living crisis and the impact it will have on co-operative and community-led groups. We will learn about how these models and values can both protect our communities and build more resilient economies.

Research from Abrdn Financial Fairness Trust and the University of Bristol has suggested Wales will be the hardest hit by the cost of living crisis across the UK, with almost a quarter of households in “serious financial difficulty”. 

This is also a difficult time for businesses, with rising energy prices, high supply costs, and potentially reduced demand for their goods and services. Grant Thornton UK LLP has found that 40% of Welsh mid-market firms have already raised their prices, with a further 50% expecting to need to do so in the future. Co-operatives, community groups and social enterprises will also be impacted by these challenging conditions.

We know that co-operatives and community-led groups play an essential role during a crisis. During Covid-19, these inspiring groups and organisations were crucial in helping the most vulnerable in our society. Over the coming months, co-operative principles and values will be vital to helping people and their well-being, saving local assets and businesses, and ensuring our economies and their communities are resilient.

In this meeting, we will learn about the economic challenges from groups themselves, and hear how they are ready to step up and help the most vulnerable in our society. We will discuss what policymakers can do to support the sector, discuss how we can best co-operate with Members of the Senedd, and demonstrate the strength of the sector.

Mae Cymru yn genedl anghyfartal yn barod gydag amodau economaidd heriol, a mae’r Conffederasiwn GIG Cymru wedi son am sut mae’r argyfwng costau byw yn gwaethygu’r anghydraddoldebau hyn.

Mae hwn yn cyfnod anodd iawn i fusnesau hefyd, gyda costau egni yn codi, costau cyflenwi uchel, ac y botensial o lai o elw am eu nwyddau a wasaneuthau. Mae Grant Thornton UK LLP wedi darganfod bod 40% o busensau canol y farchnad Cymreig wedi codi ei phrisau yn barod, gyda 50% rhagor yn disgwyl angen gwneud yn y dyfodol. Bydd cwmniau cydweithredol, grwpiau cymunedol a mentrau cymdeithasol yn cael ei heffeithio gan yr amodau heriol, ac mae angen i ni sicrhau bod y sector yn barod.

Fodd bynnag, gwyddom fod mentrau cydweithredol a grwpiau dan arweiniad y gymuned yn chwarae rhan hanfodol yn ystod cyfnod argyfwng. Trwy Covid-19, roedd y grwpiau a’r sefydliadau ysbrydoledig hyn yn hanfodol i helpu’r rhai mwyaf agored i niwed yn ein cymdeithas. Dros y misoedd nesaf, bydd egwyddorion a gwerthoedd cydweithredol yn allweddol i helpu pobl a’u llesiant, arbed asedau a busnesau lleol, a sicrhau bod ein heconomïau a’u cymunedau yn wydn.

Yn y cyfarfod hwn, byddwn yn dysgu am yr heriau economaidd gan grwpiau eu hunain, sut mae nhw yn barod i gamu i fyny a helpu'r rhai mwyaf agored i niwed yn ein cymdeithas. Byddwn yn trafod yr hyn y gall llunwyr polisi ei wneud i gefnogi’r sector, yn trafod gydag Aelodau’r Senedd am sut gallwn gydweithredu, ac yn dangos cryfder y sector.
