Building on the success of the previous two events, Co‑operatives UK has announced that a third Co‑op Hackathon will take place on 1‑2 October 2024.

The event, sponsored by The Co‑operative Bank and Central Co‑op, will build on the popularity and success of the previous two events. It takes place at Central Co‑op’s Staffordshire headquarters on 1-2 October.

The hackathon will attract innovators working to develop tech solutions in and for co‑operatives of all sizes, to collaborate on joined‑up digital solutions to movement‑wide challenges. Working in teams, they’ll turn their ideas into pioneering technology.

The previous two hackathons – in October 2023 in London and May 2024 in Manchester – saw co‑operators collaborate to boost 26 innovative projects. These included:

  • Developing open-source AI
  • Using tech to tackle the climate crisis
  • Supporting local communities
  • Helping alleviate poverty
  • Increasing alternative solutions for housing and education

Rose Marley, CEO at Co‑operatives UK, said:

“Co-operatives UK’s mission to promote digital innovation in the co-operative movement continues at pace with our series of Co-op Hackathons.

“At our next hackathon, we’ll be focusing the wealth of skill, talent and passion on developing joined-up infrastructure that solves co-operative movement-wide challenges, connects co-ops and makes them even more effective and successful.

Gary McDermott, Chief Commercial Officer at The Co‑operative Bank, said:

“As a business with deep and historic roots in the co‑operative movement, The Co‑operative Bank enshrines co‑operative values into how we operate.

“We regularly poll our customers on what matters most to them, and these views are reflected in our unique, customer‑led Ethical Policy, which details commitments on what we will and won’t do with our customers’ money. These commitments include building stronger, more resilient communities and continuing to invest in good causes and co‑operative businesses.

“That’s why we’re incredibly proud to partner with Co‑operatives UK and to sponsor this event – supporting co‑operative businesses to come together and collaborate on digital solutions that will power the future of co‑operation.”

Debbie Robinson, CEO at Central Co‑op, said:

“The co‑operative movement has always championed creative enterprise and growth across all sectors.

The preparations for the event began at Co‑op Congress in June, Co‑operatives UK’s flagship event attracting co‑operators from across the movement. A Hackathon Round Table session took place to lay the groundwork for the event in October. Further online sessions will also take place before the hackathon to help shape the event.
