A community-owned venue in Tyneside has received national recognition after winning a major music industry award celebrating the grassroots music scene.
Tyneside’s community-owned music venue, The Globe, has won a major music industry award announced at a prestigious event held in London on 7 May.
The Globe is a community-owned venue, owned and run by Co-operatives UK member, Jazz.Coop. It is the first bar and venue in the UK to be owned and run by a music co-operative. After a successful community share issue in 2014, the co-operative now has over 200 members.
At the Music Awards 2026, The Globe triumphed in the publicly-voted category of Grassroots Venue: Spirit of the Scene, supported by Music Venue Trust. The Music Week Awards are the UK's only music awards that recognise labels, publishing, live music, radio, marketing and PR - all parts of the industry that make music happen.
Debra Milne, Chair of Jazz.Coop, said: “Thanks to everyone who voted for The Globe! And special thanks to Stephen Ferrell who's transformed the events programme, Venue Manager Shelly and the lovely bar staff – and of course to the brilliant volunteers who help run events and do so much behind the scenes.”
In just 12 years, The Globe has established itself as one of the most important grassroots music venues in the north east. Further awards include:
- Jazz Venue of the Year, Parliamentary Jazz Awards 2022
- Special Award for Lockdown Innovation, Parliamentary Jazz Awards 2021
- Small Community Co-op of The Year 2021 – organised by Co-operatives UK
- Best Live Music Venue - The Newcastle Awards 2018
