Stir to Action: Worker co-ops - How to get started - London

Stir to Action workshops

This is a Stir to Action event.

Workers have a unique role in the new economy. Together, they can resist the horror of ‘business as usual’, and create new productive centres of power.

They can take over and transform existing workplaces, even industries; or start new enterprises aimed at providing for peoples’ real needs. Worker co-operation has the potential to abolish bullshit jobs, and make our desires reality.

This session looks at the theory and practice of worker co-operation, offers practical insights, arms you with information and tools to test your ideas, find collaborators, and turn plans into realities.

What to expect

  • What place do worker co-operatives have in the new economy?
  • Worker co-operation as practice.
  • Building your group, turning your idea into a plan.
  • Making connections, being part of a movement.

What you'll leave with

  • Knowledge about the scope of worker co-operation, and its potential.
  • Understanding about what worker co-ops do, and how they do it.
  • A practical checklist for testing and improving your idea.
  • New connections, and options for taking your plan forward.

Who is it for

  • Members of a worker co-op, or those who are 'worker-curious'.
  • People who want to take over or get rid of their current workplace.
  • People who think they might want to start a worker co-op.
  • Worker co-operators looking for new angles and inspiration.

The Facilitator

Siôn Whellens co-designed and launched the Worker Cooperative Solidarity Fund, which has 525 contributing members, mainly worker co-operators. SolidFund backs worker co-op education, skills development and organisation projects.

Siôn also works at Calverts, the East London design and print co-op. For the last ten years he has moonlighted as a ‘barefoot’ worker co-op adviser, working with the likes of Outlandish, AltGen, and New Internationalist. He has been on many committees, and is slowly getting back to basics.
