About the training

"Interesting, lively training environment. Lots of opportunity to discuss topics and explore individual situations. Thank you."

This one-day training session is designed to help co-operatives and their members manage change and improve their approaches to participative strategic planning. This training forms part of Co-operative UK's training programme. The programme is designed to give you and your members the practical and inter-personal skills needed to run a successful co-operative.

Training covers:

  • Exploring shared goals and motivations
  • Developing a shared understanding about what strategic development means
  • Exploring some participative approaches to strategic planning
  • Practical exercises using a range of strategic planning tools and techniques
  • Managing change

How attendees will benefit

By the end of the training attendees will:

  • Have a clearer understanding of what strategic planning is, why we do it, who does it and how and when it is done
  • Have discussed how to differentiate strategic from operational/tactical decisions
  • Be more aware of a range of tools and techniques for doing participative strategic planning
  • Have practised at least one of those tools with respect to strategic planning in their own co-operatives
  • Have explored an approach to understanding how change impacts on the co-operative and individual responses to change
  • Have shared ideas on how to disseminate their learning in their own co-operatives

Who should attend?

This seminar is designed with worker co-operatives in mind, so will be useful for any member who has an interest in strategic planning and wants to know how to engage the wider membership. However, it will of course also be useful for members of strategic planning teams, committee members, board members and any co-operative member with an interest in or responsibility for strategic planning.

About the trainer

Kate Whittle from Co-operantics will be running this session: A talented and experienced trainer and facilitator, with excellent communication skills, Kate has been working in and with co-operatives of all kinds, in the UK and overseas, for nearly 30 years. In the last decade she has focused on promoting and teaching ‘co-operative’ skills – those basic skills that enable people to work together effectively in non-hierarchical, democratically-managed organisations. She developed the highly popular Co-operative Skills seminar ‘Strategic planning and managing change’ for Co-operatives UK and has now delivered it to around 25 co-ops across the UK.

  • “Excellent training with great tools & strategies to take away. Thanks”
  • “Interactive, fun and informative!”
