About the training

"Excellent! Eye opener, really motivating! [The trainer] had excellent knowledge. It was a very enjoyable, informative and useful training. To me personally – a game changer. Thank you!" Director, Unicorn Grocery

Who can be on a co-operative's board of directors and what are their legal responsibilities? This training course covers these issues and all the other essentials required to be an effective member of the board of a co-op, with a focus on legal duties. Attendees will benefit from both a theory-led and practical approach in sessions delivered by experienced professional trainers.

This one-day training session provides all the essentials a successful co-operative director needs. There is a focus on the legal and governance knowledge required in addition to the softer skills needed to support and build relationships.

How much does it cost?

The training costs £95 + VAT for members of Co-operatives UK and £136 + VAT for non-members.

How attendees will benefit

Attendees will benefit by understanding the role of a co-op director and their legal responsibilities. They will also learn about what they can do to be an effective director and discuss the attributes and skills of a ‘perfect director’ in a co-op. Attendees will complete the training knowing what the role of the board is and the directors place within it, and will know what they need to do to make their board effective.

Who should attend

The training is for those who have recently been appointed to the board of their co-op or who are thinking about becoming a director. It also acts as a refresher for more experienced directors.

What attendees will learn

  • To understand the legal duties and responsibilities of a director
  • To understand the practical application of these duties in relation to their role
  • To gain an awareness of the role of the board in relation to the members and the employees
  • To understand what constitutes, and how you can contribute towards, a high performing co-op board
