Corporate Governance Code for Agricultural Co‑operatives

Published in conjunction with Scottish Agricultural Organisation (SAOS)

Who is the Code for?

Agricultural co-operatives are owned and controlled by their farmer members who work together to achieve a commercial objective that they could not achieve working independently of each other.

In the UK, these businesses have long been amongst the co-operative sector’s most successful.

How the Agricultural Code is structured

The Code is structured on three levels:

  • High-level principles: The key principles of governance that are applicable to all co-operatives
  • Supporting principles: Illustrations of what might constitute good governance compliance
  • Provisions: Specific points on which all agricultural co-operatives must report annually

Adoption of the code

If you are an agricultural co-operative and would like to adopt the Code, please contact us.
