Campaigns

Campaigning for gender equality has been an important part of the Co-operative Movement since 1883 when the Co-operative Womens Guild was founded.

Below are some  campaigns you may like  to find out more about or lend your voice to:

Equality in Democratic Representation

  • Electoral Reform Society. The Counting Women IN campaign is fighting to ensure women have an equal presence and voice in British politics. Women make up only 1 in 5 MPs and Electoral Reform Society is demanding British government  keeps its promise that one third of all ministerial places will be held by women by 2015.

Resources for Gender Equality Campaigning

  • Government Equalities Office. The Think, Act, Report campaign is a voluntary initiative to drive greater transparency on gender employment issues. It provides a framework to help companies think about gender equality in their workforces, on key issues such as recruitment, retention, promotion, and pay. The initiative encourages them to share their progress on these issues. It is up to individual firms to decide what information they publish.
  • Women's Resource Centre. Why women? campaign calls on the government to put gender back on the agenda. It aims at supporting women’s organisations which are under threat from lack of funding.

Women Opposing Violence Against Women

  • EVAWC - The End Violence Against Women Coalition is a coalition of organisations and individuals campaigning to end all forms of violence against women in the UK. Its current campaigns include preventing violence against women and girls, making London a global leader on women's safety, and ensuring all women and girls who experience violence have specialist support.
  • The National Union of Students' leading campaign focuses on the impact of violence and objectification towards women students. They are fighting for better rights for student parents and better representation for women in students’ unions.
  • Women's Aid has launched a national campaign asking both men and women to send out the message that 'Real Men'  do not abuse and control women – physically, emotionally, sexually or financially.
