The Co-operative Group hails great deal that would mark the biggest shake-up in high street banking in a generation.
The Board of The Co-operative Group has agreed to proceed on the basis of non-binding heads of terms with Lloyds Banking Group (LBG) in relation to the acquisition of the “Verde” business. The move by The Co-operative Group would create a real challenger bank on the High Street with almost 1,000 branches.
Owned and controlled by members and not shareholders, more than 5,900 co-operative businesses in the UK contribute £35.6bn to the UK economy and operate across all business sectors. For the past four years, the sector has outperformed the UK economy, demonstrating resilience in difficult economic times and proving that values and principles go hand in hand with commercial performance.
The UK co-operative economy is the annual state of the sector report produced by Co-operatives UK, the trade association for co-operative and mutual businesses.

To celebrate Co- operatives Fortnight, I sent off a cheque to buy a little share in the fantastic Holmfirth Fair Traders Coop making me their 500 member, while this Fairtrade Fortnight, I had a blast down at the North London The People’s Supermarket, made famous by Channel Four, where members gathered on grumpy old sofas to listen to farmers.
