What is a co-operative?

Co-operative businesses are owned and run by and for their members, whether they are customers, employees or residents. As well as giving members an equal say and share of the profits, co-operatives act together to build a better world.

Co-operatives are a flexible business model. They can be set up in different ways, using different legal structures, depending on what works for the members.

Worker Co-operative Code of Governance

This Code brings together the fundamentals of worker co-operative governance for the first time. Based on the seven co-operative principles agreed by the International Co-operative Alliance in 1995, it explains how to use these principles to both run your business and govern your co-operative successfully.

Maintaining the Balance

'Honesty' and 'Openness' are two of the ethical values of
being a co-operative.  One of our members
recently asked the question of how as a co-operative they could balance
openness at governing body meetings, by inviting members and staff to attend
governing body meetings as observers, with the need to make strategic
decisions, which may be controversial, about the overall aim of the
co-operative.
