Co-operatives Bill - The week after the week before

It has been a week since Prime Minister, David Cameron made the historic announcement that the legislation relating to co-operatives will be consolidated into one Act.  As we float down from cloud nine it is a good opportunity to reflect on what it may mean for co-operatives and the co-operative movement more generally.

 

The New UK Co-op Bill: In Praise of Diversity

Yesterday, Prime Minister David Cameron announced a Co-operatives Bill to consolidate the laws around Co-operative Societies (a subset of Industrial and Provident Societies, I think). This is overdue and very welcome.

Updating Industrial and Provident Society Legislation (IPS) - Status Report November 2011

It has been widely acknowledged by government and the sector that Industrial and Provident Society legislation, the traditional legal form for co-operatives, and its regulatory framework is in need of modernisation. Co-operatives UK along with other bodies in the movement, such as ABCUL and the Co-operative Party, have been pro-actively working on its modernisation for some time.

This report details the progress that has been made so far.
