It has been a week since Prime Minister, David Cameron made the historic announcement that the legislation relating to co-operatives will be consolidated into one Act. As we float down from cloud nine it is a good opportunity to reflect on what it may mean for co-operatives and the co-operative movement more generally.

It’s going to be an exciting and challenging year for energy co-operatives. With the Feed in Tariff yet to be decided, plans for an energy co-operatives manifesto and the next stage of The Co-operative’s Support Clean Energy campaign, we want to make sure that we can continue to represent your needs at a national level.
It has been widely acknowledged by government and the sector that Industrial and Provident Society legislation, the traditional legal form for co-operatives, and its regulatory framework is in need of modernisation. Co-operatives UK along with other bodies in the movement, such as ABCUL and the Co-operative Party, have been pro-actively working on its modernisation for some time.
This report details the progress that has been made so far.
Our Policy Framework sets out the way we approach policy as an organisation in terms of processes, attitudes and priorities, to maximise our impact with the resources we have to hand.
As the trade association for the co-operative sector and the strategic voice of co operation in the UK, one of our key roles is to lobby and work with the government and other decision makers.
